The Anne Frank Foundation was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father, with the primary aim of collecting enough funds to purchase and restore the building. In October of that year, the company who owned it donated the building to the foundation as a goodwill gesture. The collected funds were then used to purchase the house next door, Number 265, shortly before the remaining buildings on the block were pulled down as planned.

Through this informative and interactive talk, you will be well prepared for your visit.The program is in English and costs € 7.00 extra. Actress Hailee Steinfeld, an Academy Award® nominee for the 2010 film True Grit, brings Anne’s words to life through her narration, which is heard throughout the exhibit. Steinfeld’s narration is augmented by numerous displays of artifacts that range from postcards, photos and magazines to games, letters to pen pals, and a reproduction of Anne’s blank diary, a gift on her thirteenth birthday.

Anne’s story, told in her own words, comes to life through rare artifacts, unique documents, and photographs. Visitors view a facsimile of her famous diary and several other examples of her original writing that culminated in what has become one of the most famous and well-read books ever. The museum, which opened in 1960, also includes two adjacent buildings.

Every Tuesday at 10am CET all tickets become available for a visit six weeks later. You can opt for a museum visit or a museum visit with an introductory program. The University provided the advance funding and made up the shortage of the Anne Frank House. If you enjoy exploring the historic homes of famous, and not-so-famous people, there are a number of historic residences in Southern California that are open to the public as museums. Most of them are City, State and National Historic Landmarks There is some overlap with LA Local History Museums. In one of her early diary entries, dated July 11, 1942, Anne wrote, “Daddy, Mummy, and Margot can’t get used to the sound of the Westertoren clock yet, which tells us the time every quarter of an hour. I loved it from the start, and especially in the night it’s like a faithful friend.” The church is mentioned frequently in Anne’s diary - the clock tower could be seen from the Secret Annex. The exhibit features an actual recording of the Westertoren clock, which chimes every 15 minutes.
Building history
In 2022, inspired by Anne Frank’s story, 10 year old Olivia Prince, with the support of Anne Frank LA, approached Councilmember Paul Koretz (CD5) about declaring an official day to honor Anne’s legacy. Our programs enable learners of all ages to better understand the dangers of prejudice and discrimination, the importance of democracy, and how to become upstanders rather than bystanders. Shortly after the book was published, visitors were shown around by the employees who had hidden the families and could see the secret rooms. However, by 1955, the company had moved to new premises and the entire block to which the building belonged was sold to a single estate agent who served a demolition order with the intention of building a factory on the space. A campaign to save the building and to list it as a protected monument was started by the Dutch paper Het Vrije Volk on 23 November 1955. The building was saved by campaigners who staged a protest outside the building on the day of demolition.
There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. Anne is an extraordinary new immersive exhibit on the life and legacy of Anne Frank.

On April 26, 2022, The Los Angeles City Council adopted a resolution declaring May 12 to be Anne Frank Day in the City of Los Angeles. The day honors Anne, her father Otto (whose birthday is May 12), and the nearly 1.5 million children who perished during the Holocaust.
